Perrier – Jinnah Hockey Tournament 2009

The inaugural Perrier-Jinnah Hockey Tournament will be held at the King’s Park Hockey Ground on 21st and 22nd March 2009. The event is sponsored by the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and is organized with the help of the Hong Kong Hockey Association.

This tournament will feature the premier division teams from Shaheen Sports Club, Hong Kong Football Club, Pakistan Association of Hong Kong, Kowloon Cricket Club, Valley Rugby Football Club, Khalsa Sports Club, Singh Sabah Sports Club and the first division team from Elite Sports Club. There will be two pools and each pool will have 4 teams. It is a 9-a-side tournament and will be the first one in Hong Kong with cash prize for the winners, runner-ups and all the participating teams.

An exhibition match between 2 ladies teams, Shaheen Sports Club and Elite Sports Club, will be held on the final day, Sunday 22 March.

Details and other information regarding the tournament were announced at a Press Conference on 9 March.

Olympic hockey qualifying tournaments started in Auckland

The first of three Olympic hockey qualifying tournaments started in
Auckland on Saturday with convincing victories for Ireland, New Zealand and Argentina.
Six teams are competing for a place at the Beijing games in August,
Ireland beat France 4-0 in the first match, Mark Gleghorne giving them
a first half lead before John Jermyn made it 2-0. Michael Watt scored two more
to put the game beyond doubt。 New Zealand strolled to an 11-0 win.
Hayden Shaw opened the floodgates following a penalty corner for his
100th international goal before Simon Child and David Kosoof each netted four.
Argentina were obviously inspired by New Zealand’s example as they took
the United States apart, running out 9-1 winners.
Lucas Vila and Mario Almada both scored three times with Juan Garreta,
Lucas Rossi and Matias Vila adding to American embarrassment. Nate Coolidge
got the consolation goal for the US in the final seconds.
STORY: India’s Kolkata plays host to 25,000 participants in their marathon. Conducted in chilly weather the marathon evoked considerable interest among sponsors and participants alike.

People from wide cross-section of society took part in the marathon. They included corporate executives, school children, physically challenged, the young and the old.

“This is for the city of Kolkatta, I think that it is very important. Every year I’m here. When the marathons in Bombay and Delhi are such a big events we can too make it a success with the help of everybody.”
The glamour quotient of the run was kept high by the Tollywood stars like Tapas Pal, June Malia and many others who came in full force to see the marathon.

“I’m here because I love my city and I’m so glad that today so many
people have come in the morning cold but yet people have braved weather and
they are all here to celebrate the spirit of Kolkatta.”
The winner of the mens marathon was Bhairo Singh Loney while Pampa Chandra was adjudged the winner of the women section.
