If your playing hockey in a youth club, you should have them sharpened at least once a week. If you get a nick in the blade, have them both sharpened that day. If you only skate 4 or 5 times a year you should have them done at the beginning of each season just to get the rust off.

A good general rule is to have them sharpened for every 6-12 hours you’re on the ice, depending on your personal preference.

As a goalie, I have them sharpened less frequently (personal preference). I have 1-2 games a week and a practice 2-3x per month (on ice 6-7 times a month) and will do them every 6-8 weeks.

This is completely dependent upon how much you skate.

A good rule to follow is every 5-10 hours. Some prefer to sharpen more frequently, others less often. It also matters how aggressive you skate.

    - For a player that goes all out and has advanced skills, might want to sharpen every 3 hours of ice time (2 games and 1 practice, or 3 games)

    - Intermediate can go 5-6 hours (4-6 games/practices)

    - Beginner is more difficult to say. Some say that since they don’t get as aggressively, they don’t need to be sharpened as much. However, if you are learning to skate, it is much easier with freshly sharpened blades. Nothing more frustrating than trying to learn with poor equipment

    - Another factor is outdoor skating. Outdoor ice can be much rougher, bumpier and have different hardness than indoor ice, since it is not reglated. Sharpening may need to be done twice as often if you do your skating outside.

I personally do 90% of my skating outdoors. The only reason that 10% isn’t outdoors is because I need to drive 30 min one way to get to a place that will sharpen, so I usually end up skating while I’m there. Other than that, I play a game 2-3 times a week and get them sharpened most weekends.

    Tobywuk,
Typically a player loses between 15-25% of their edge efficiency for every hour on the ice. As you skate, your edges actually wear even though the hollow remains the same.

As a goalie, I keep my skates sharp (with a half inch hollow) by using a pro-filer (keeps my hollow consistent), a flat stone (keeps the burrs off my edges) and I dress the blade last with a "Sweet Stick" (a ceramic hand-held skate edge enhancer).

By doing these things, I can keep a consistent edge on my blades as different sharpeners at different rinks can be pretty inconsistent in their work. I know of forwards and defensemen doing the same, to prolong the times before needing a sharpening at a rink or pro shop.

If your blade radius, profile and hollow are good, try the above to keep your blades consistent and minimize sharpening at the rinks.

Once a week when I played, 3or4 games 4 practices a week at that time.
And I was a Keeper too. The sharper the blade the more control of my edges.

Not only does it depend on how much or long you skate, but also the quality of ice. My dilemma was that I played in 2 leagues. One had rock hard ice and the other really soft/wet ice. The hard ice needed sharp edges and the soft needed duller edges. What I did was buy a stone and run the stone up and down the sides according to each ice. The hard ice was and still is about 20 per side and the soft ice gets 3-5 quick strokes. I find that you can go a longer time by using the stone. I get them done maybe every 8 games by using the stone.

i sharpen my skates when their dull. you’ll be surprised how much faster U can go with less effort if you have freshly sharpened skates. when i was younger i would keep them dull to build leg strength. but… that might be a little Intense. so if you feel your speed isn’t what it usually is and your skates are not digging into the ice enough to make a sharp stop then get them sharpened.

if you really want to build skill practice a lot off the ice. do leg, abb, and arm excersizes. next, play some street hockey with your buddies this will be a fun way to practice.
