It's like the difference between the regular season and the playoffs. When the USA beat Canada, it was in the preliminary round, which is like the regular season -- all it did was establish seedings for the medal round. That's why those of us who follow hockey kept saying Team USA's win was not that big of a deal. It wasn't for a medal, and it didn't eliminate anyone.

If the Colts and Saints had met in the regular season, for example, the outcome of that game would have had no bearing on the Super Bowl. Same deal with USA vs. Canada.
References :
If the team who wins the four games in the Finals this June has lost to the loser in a regular season game, does that team still win the Cup?
References :
There is no winners and losers bracket.

Preliminary round results were used for seeding teams in the Medal Round. Then the results were thrown out and it became single-elimination.

If you're the best team, you can beat anyone else, at any time under any circumstances. Case closed, and if the US doesn't win tomorrow, they clearly aren't the best team.
References :
IF by some fluke of emormous proportions occurs and WE the United States should lose..

I would demand a 3rd and deciding game be played for the GOLD medal. Because you are right... each team would have a win and loss Vs eachother and by rights, they should play one more for all the marbles.

BUT...

Lets just take care of business and sweep the cry-babies and let them return to their NHL teams to pout... the way the US team destroyed Finland should have served notice.
References :
Just like the super bowl. It's one game and winner takes all. I think its completely fair. It shows who can play best under pressure. Besides the US had a easier road to get the gold medal game. They played 2 games while Canada played 3.
References :
The preliminary games, where you played everyone in your group, just established the standings for the second round which is single elimination knockout style play. There wasn't a winners and losers bracket.
