Legends of Hockey – Wayne Gretzky

Wayne Douglas Gretzky, OC (born January 26, 1961) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player, currently coach and part-owner of the Phoenix Coyotes. Born and raised in Brantford, Ontario, Gretzky regularly played at a level far above his peers. In 1978, he signed with the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association (WHA), where he briefly played before being signed by the Edmonton Oilers. When the WHA folded, the Oilers joined the National Hockey League (NHL), where Gretzky won four Stanley Cups, nine Hart Trophies as the most valuable player, and ten Art Ross Trophies for most points in a season.

Nicknamed “The Great One”, Gretzky was called “the greatest player of all time” in Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the NHL.[1] He is generally regarded as the best player in history,[2] and has been called “the greatest hockey player ever” by many sportswriters,[3][4] players,[5] and coaches. Upon his retirement on April 18, 1999, he held forty regular-season records, fifteen playoff records, and six All-Star records. He is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season — a feat he accomplished four times. In addition, he tallied over 100 points a season for 15 NHL seasons, 13 of them consecutively. He is the only player to have his number (99) officially retired by the National Hockey League for all teams.

After his retirement in 1999, he was immediately inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He became Executive Director for the Canadian national men’s hockey team during the 2002 Winter Olympics, where the team won a gold medal. In 2000, he became part owner of the Phoenix Coyotes and following the 2004-05 NHL lockout became their head coach.

    I mean Stamkos …
I mean Stamkos didn’t even make Team Canada for the Olympics and he has 48 goals. Can you believe that? It’s obvious that Canada could have sent 6 teams and still won the Olympics

No one will ever be …
No one will ever be able to dominate the game like Gretzky or Lemieux again, These days the NHL is just too competitive. What you get instead is a much larger variety of very skilled players.

  3. broadstreet2 says:

    Gretzky was great …
Gretzky was great because he was smart, resourceful, and resourceful, always finding a way to win. He didn’t need to be big, fast, or overpowering.

BTW, notice how Bettman never mentions Canada, he just talks about Gretz’ importance to American expansion.

    Folks, the 99 vs. …
Folks, the 99 vs. 66 vs 4 argument doean’t even begin until No’s 99 & 66 start to win Selke Trophies as best defensive forward. Orr won scoring titles, MVP’s and Norris trophies…to my knowledge the other guys only won MVP’s and scoring titles. 4 did it all! Not hating on 99 or 66 at all!

brandywhatever I agree that mario would have been a better player had he not had injuries, but ovechkin is not in either mario or wayne’s league. If you have ever watched those to play you would see the difference. Ovechkin is great, but he doesn’t dominate they way those guys did. Crosby doesn’t either

    Nobody in any sport …
Nobody in any sport has ever dominated like Wayne Gretzky. Had he never scored 1 goal, he would still be the All-Time Points Leader on assists alone. By the way, he is also the All-Time Leading Goal Scorer. I don’t even know how to compare that to any other leader in athletic competition.
    Simply Incredible!

  23. schmazly2 says:

    As for best …
As for best ambassador in sport, I have to maybe disagree. If you were to consider motorcycle racing sport, then you would have to give Valentino Rossi this title. There is something very similar between the two, but Rossi’s playful charisma is so wonderful. His showmanship on and off the track worth the ticket alone!

If this is the case …
If this is the case, why wasn’t every player in the NHL like Gretzky?

I mean there were great players like Gretzky, but somehow Gretzky had all the records and praise. Explain how that is possible?
