Are there any hockey players that play left handed but write right handed?

I play hockey left-handed, but I write right-handed. I was wondering if there are any NHL players that are like that, or vice versa.

Yeah, tons.

I’m not sure what you mean – do you mean shoot left and are right-handed?

The majority of players shoot left. The numbers I’m looking at are from 2006, show that 61% of forwards shot left and 72% of defensemen shot left; but only 8-15% of people are left-handed.

Making an educated guess, most right-handers in hockey are shooting left.

Almost every player that plays left handed writes right handed. I do the same thing, and always wondered it too. But there aren’t very many people that are actually left-handed.

I can’t point you to anyone but, since I’m the same I would be willing to hazard a guess that there are plenty.

I’ve heard that you’re technically supposed to shoot with the opposite hand that you write with–so a left-handed player is right-handed when writing, and a right-handed player the opposite. By no means is that always true, of course, as plenty of people will do things their own way, but I would imagine it holds true for the most part.

I would also venture a guess that most of the older left-handed Russian players are probably right-handed. According to my Russian-born geography professor, students during the Soviet era were made to learn to write right-handed, whatever their natural inclination. So I’d imagine that held as true for future hockey players as it did for anyone else.

I’m a Lefty who Shoots Right Handed. Ala Cam Neely.

Anyways, More than %90 of the Human Population is right handed. Yet almost %70 of the NHL shoots Left handed. I’ve heard a few theories on this, here are my favorites.

When you’re a little kid, and pick up your first hockey stick, as a right handed child, you pick up your stick with your right hand at the top. You never change, and get used to shooting left until it becomes second nature, and shooting right feels odd.

Side Note: The Canadian National Baseball team has more Left Handed hitters than any other team in the world. Why? They figured it went back to their young Canadian Hockey days when they become Left handed Hockey players.

Last but least, this way is taught in SOME hockey schools, to use the opposite hand. Since you will be playing hockey with your hand off of your stick more than with two hands, you will want your dominate hand(usually right) to be your top hand(which is also the control hand).

There are alotta right handed guys shooting left in the NHL, Crosby and Malkin are both rightys who shoot Left. While Russians Semin and Ovechkin and Jeff Carter are all Rightys who shoot Right handed. Notice the Rightys with Right handedness seem to have sick wrist shots since their control hand is lower on the stick? Just a theory.

as high as 90 percent of left handed low shots are right handed. easier to hold stick left low minor hockey. very common in all sports.

From what it’s worth, when skating out I use a righty stick but a lefty when in net.
I am ambidextrious in soccer, lacrosse and tennis; righty in basketball, and in baseball I throw right but hit left.

Oh and I typically write right handed.

just about the majority of them do..

myself though, I shoot right and write right-handed but when in goal I hold the stick with my left hand and catch right…. it would feel so awkward if I had to poke check with my right hand or sweep the puck away

I found the same stats as Amy B. And since it isn’t true that 60-70% of the world is left handed, yeah, I think there are lots of right handed NHLers that shoot left.
