i am 13 years old and i have recently become very interested in goal tending. one of best friends is an ice hockey goalie and he has let me borrow his street hockey pads, a glove, a blocker, and a stick. i have had my friends and brother shoot on me in all the equipment and i have had a lot of fun. i want to become an ice hockey goalie but i do not know where to start. i have never played ice hockey before.if anyone has tips on how i should start off getting into the game i would greatly appreciate it.

One of the first steps is if you have never skated before, take some lessons or go to your rinks open skate sessions.
Then, see if your rink has a "Learn to Play Ice Hockey" sessions. Most are not expensive and are on the weekend. I am not sure if you should use goalie equipment for these session, just hockey player equipment. Check with the rink to see the requirements. Most have a room where they have some used stuff for you to use while you are starting until you get your own.

If you decide you continue, look for some cheap goalie equipment on ebay, craigslist or at a local used sports store (Play it Again Sports). You should be able to find good equipment but make sure it is for ice, not roller or street. Again, you many find that the local rink has some stuff to borrow until you buy your own.

Then go for the house or rec league. Most of the time, the kids are beginners and would be great for a beginner goalie.

If you are getting better and are really serious about it, take private lessons with a coach. Those will be expensive ($50-$100 for 1/2 hr) but would really improve your goaltending skills.

At home, get yourself some hockey roller skates and practice the movements.

USA Hockey has some good drills to help young goalies get better. I have put the link below. It has off ice workouts too. Just look around in the website.

Don’t worry about what style you are. Just worry about staying in front of the shooter and keeping your body square to him. Keep your stick down and in front of your feet.

I sometimes feel like they should put me on their payroll but the Durham Hockey Institute runs a summer camp just outside of Philadelphia. You might have heard of a couple of their principals. Keith and Wayne Primeau.

I notice in hockey, if the teams go into overtime but lose in overtime, they still get a point! Why is that? How does that work? Does them getting a point in overtime still count?

The overtime loss point serves as a replacement for the point that would’ve been acquired from a tie-game after 3 periods. Like it was a while ago. For a few years there actually was overtime losses with no points and many players/owners/coaches/fans thought it was unfair so they fixed it.

For a while , before shootouts there were as many as four numbers in standings statistics. They stood for wins , losses , ties , overtime losses. These days a team loosing either in the overtime or after a shootout receive a mark in the 3rd column basically meaning they obtained one point for losing a game after 60 minutes of regular play.

I am 14 and I played hockey till I was 9. I quit cause my coach was racist and I was always put on the bench. I play shinny most of the time with the older guys and I usually have good dangles and can get 1 or 2 goals every game. But I am finally starting to play hockey next year. So this year I am going to get in shape and muscular and skilled so next year in bantam I can be at the same skill level or better. So i need some good hockey drills. i have my own backyard rink that I can practice on. So what are some good stick handling drills, skating skills, everything. I would like to make it into the WHL in canada.

Here is a site that might help.

http://www.besthockeydrills.com/hockey-drills/newsletter.html

Either that or go to a library and look in the sports section under hockey there might be some good things there.
My local library for example has on its shelves the DVD
"my hockey tips and training methods " by Alexei Kovalev.

Good luck
