i am 13 years old and i have recently become very interested in goal tending. one of best friends is an ice hockey goalie and he has let me borrow his street hockey pads, a glove, a blocker, and a stick. i have had my friends and brother shoot on me in all the equipment and i have had a lot of fun. i want to become an ice hockey goalie but i do not know where to start. i have never played ice hockey before.if anyone has tips on how i should start off getting into the game i would greatly appreciate it.

One of the first steps is if you have never skated before, take some lessons or go to your rinks open skate sessions.
Then, see if your rink has a "Learn to Play Ice Hockey" sessions. Most are not expensive and are on the weekend. I am not sure if you should use goalie equipment for these session, just hockey player equipment. Check with the rink to see the requirements. Most have a room where they have some used stuff for you to use while you are starting until you get your own.

If you decide you continue, look for some cheap goalie equipment on ebay, craigslist or at a local used sports store (Play it Again Sports). You should be able to find good equipment but make sure it is for ice, not roller or street. Again, you many find that the local rink has some stuff to borrow until you buy your own.

Then go for the house or rec league. Most of the time, the kids are beginners and would be great for a beginner goalie.

If you are getting better and are really serious about it, take private lessons with a coach. Those will be expensive ($50-$100 for 1/2 hr) but would really improve your goaltending skills.

At home, get yourself some hockey roller skates and practice the movements.

USA Hockey has some good drills to help young goalies get better. I have put the link below. It has off ice workouts too. Just look around in the website.

Don’t worry about what style you are. Just worry about staying in front of the shooter and keeping your body square to him. Keep your stick down and in front of your feet.

Is it possible to get recruited to play college division 1 out of high school? Or do i HAVE to play in a junior hockey league first?

I don’t think so…

But you have to be really talented and get a scholarship to play for a Division I college hockey team (ie. Boston College, U of Maine, U of Minnesota). And most of those players that got a scholarship DID play for a junior team.

Here’s a list of places in the Denver area. Call and talk to them about it – they probably know of places for him to find used equipment that will fit him since he’s a beginner.

I’m a 15 year old girl and I started ice skating lessons late last year and now can skate forwards relatively fast (on figure skates) and backwards very slowly and can sort of do cross-overs. I want to start ice hockey lessons in 2 months or so, so I can play next year, will I be good enough? If not how good do I need to be? I also play normal hockey (field hockey?) are the skills used similar?

House League/Local League:
FORWARD:
- Skate Forward better than Backwards.
- Be able to raise the puck at least 6 inches.
- Stick-handle fairly well.
- Push the puck while skating.
- No need to worry about body-contact, was removed on for these leagues.
- Crossovers (Ex. Lift leg over planted leg to turn quickly)

DEFENSE:
- Backwards Skating is a must.
- Able to raise the puck 6 inches from the blue line or top of the circles.
- Good back checker (skating back to your end to prevent a scoring opportunity)

Representative League:
FORWARD:
- Skate forward faster than 20/25km/hr.
- Be able to shoot from any point in the oppositions end.
- Take physical contact.
- Good back checking.
- Good stick handling.
- Need to have wrist shot, snap shot, back hand, and slap shot down to a fine art.
- Need to be fit throughout the season.
- Crossovers need to be good both ways (Left/Right)

DEFENSE:
- Backwards skating needs to be almost as good as forward skating.
- Slap shot is needed: Must be able to hit the net at any point in the oppositions end.
- Take physical contact.
- Crossover need to be good both ways (Left/Right) backwards and forwards.
- Need to keep head up at all times.
- Back checking quickly and efficiently
- Passing must be good.

I just got a pair of my own ice hockey skates for school, you know, to show off and spray people. And every time I try to hockey stop, my skate slides and I have done the splits a lot from this. I don’t think i will get back as much as I paid for them so I have to keep them. Does it mean that the skates are crappy? Or got to sharp? They’re really sharp.

if you are doing a hockey stop, your skates should slide for awhile, you are doing the splits because you aren’t controlling your own weight. It sounds like you could practice skating technique, before blaming your skates?

The ice hockey world cup is coming up but some players won’t get the chance to play for their country because of the Stanley Cup playoffs. This is frankly bizarre. Surely the highlight of a player’s career is to play for their country, and the world cup is 100 times more important than a domestic competition. If I was one of those players I would livid I could not play for my country.

Very few NHL players share the same passion for the World Championships as you.

For most hockey players around the world (including those in the European Leagues), the apex of the hockey world is the Stanley Cup. It is the oldest trophy in professional sports, and one of the hardest to win. Alexander Ovechkin has stated many times that his goal is to win the Stanley Cup. Several high profile NHL players whose teams did not make the playoffs, or were eliminated early, have turned down their country to rest for the next NHL season (Jarome Iginla this year, Mike Green and Sidney Crosby last year, Nicklas Lidstrom in 2003 and 2006). For a lot of these guys, the Stanley Cup is far more important.

I’ve been meaning to try to play ice hockey but I am still wondering how I will be able to play out on the ice? Can you EASILY break your arms and legs?

The most common injuries that I ever see are hand/wrist and foot/ankle injuries, because you can get slashed on the hands or wrists and while blocking shots you’ll usually get hit in the foot or ankle, which can break bones or leave very painful bruises.

Some other injuries that you see every once in a while are concussions, cracked ribs, minor bone fractures, etc. but very rarely is there ever any injury that keeps you out for more than 2 weeks or so. Worst I’ve ever had is a fractured wrist (got slashed) which kept me out almost an entire season, just because of the amount of time it took for me to be able to use it again without pain or lack of mobility.

Usually you’ll get maybe 1-2 injuries per season that make you consider not playing a game or two, but you’ll wanna play through it, trust me!

I am writing a story with teenagers that play ice hockey and I need to know when the season starts and finishes and how long games are and when they start and end. My story is set in Minnesota but it really doesn’t matter where the info is from, I will make it work.
I really need to know that last date of the games (for both boys and girls), so if someone had a schedule, that would be much appreciated!

10/16/2011 — 3/12/2011
these are the dates from first pre-season camp to state championship game
for our hockey association
MN youth hockey in Class A Section 3
other schools might start practice earlier

length of games —
Mite / Squirt / G8U / G10U — roughly 1 hr
PeeWee / Bantam / G12U / G14U — 1.5 hr
JV / BV / GJV / GV — 2 hr

FYI — initials
G8U = girls 8 and under and accordingly
JV = junior varsity    G = girls
BV = boys varsity
GV = girls varsity
