Is it illegal to mAke people stay at a certain hotel when they come to play in your hockey tournament?

It depends on the wording of a team’s contract as part of attending the tournament. In many cases it’s part of a contract which means it’s enforceable. Unless the hotel is completely substandard or does not have acceptable accommodation (i.e. double rooms were promised and single rooms were delivered).

This is part of a bigger sausage-making process.

Host team tries to procure sponsorships to hopefully be profitable or at least break even during a tournament. Otherwise, the costs for teams to play in the tournament would be much higher. The host team has to pay for ice time, officials, pucks, and any giveouts/handouts that are part of hosting. Ideally, the tournament would make money that would be churned back into the hockey team and/or its parent group.

Hotel(s) commit to offering rooms at a discounted rate in turn for being promised "X" number of rooms (plus, in many cases the hotel(s) will agree to pay a rebate to the tournament host for every room purchased…much like a commission, if you will). A hotel will contract with the tournament, and hold rooms for said tournament, potentially turning away business from other sources. In turn for doing this the hotel is promised the business and has a contract from the tournament stipulating that they will, in effect, buy "X" number of rooms for "Y" nights.

Logistically, forfeiting a team that spent money to travel to a tournament but stayed at the non-contracted hotel is brutal and optically looks bad, but it’s been done. It’s definitely the worst-case scenario.

Back to the sausage-making process…at some point your minor hockey team/association will host a tournament and likely make the same stipulations to visiting teams.

Meijer State Games of Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – About 3500 athletes from around the state will compete in a variety of sports in the Meijer State Games of Michigan, officially beginning Friday night at the Van Andel Arena.

Competition, though, began Thursday with a hockey tournament.

There are many other sports in the Meijer State Games: adult and youth softball, basketball, BMX, bowling, boxing, fencing, mountain biking, rowing, rugby, Tae Kwon Do, track & field, indoor and outdoor volleyball, racquetball and figure skating.

Organizers want people to think of this as Michigan’s version of the Olympics.

“Everyone knows the Olympics,” said Mike Guswiler of the West Michigan Sports Commission. “It’s the epitome of amateur sports. And I think that’s the message that you kind of scale down to our state and really base it around that. You base it around the opening ceremonies.”

Perrier – Jinnah Hockey Tournament 2009

The inaugural Perrier-Jinnah Hockey Tournament will be held at the King’s Park Hockey Ground on 21st and 22nd March 2009. The event is sponsored by the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and is organized with the help of the Hong Kong Hockey Association.

This tournament will feature the premier division teams from Shaheen Sports Club, Hong Kong Football Club, Pakistan Association of Hong Kong, Kowloon Cricket Club, Valley Rugby Football Club, Khalsa Sports Club, Singh Sabah Sports Club and the first division team from Elite Sports Club. There will be two pools and each pool will have 4 teams. It is a 9-a-side tournament and will be the first one in Hong Kong with cash prize for the winners, runner-ups and all the participating teams.

An exhibition match between 2 ladies teams, Shaheen Sports Club and Elite Sports Club, will be held on the final day, Sunday 22 March.

Details and other information regarding the tournament were announced at a Press Conference on 9 March.

Pavilion Cup Pond Hockey Tournament – Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada – February 5-8, 2009

Amateur Video made of a photo compilation from the event. The event was set up as a charity fund-raiser to help establish a free summer camp for youth in the Saint John, NB area. The tournament raised $45,000.00.
