Good off ice drills for hockey when not on the ice?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Well i have been working extremely hard this summer doing on ice camps to prepare me for tryouts in November for the jv team. I came close to making it last year but dint. What are some good drills to be doing of ice, i have a net in my garage with the board of synthetic ice to shoot of off and stick handling balls. what are some good drills?
Ya so like drills i can do at home to improve on when i get on the ice. its called dryland here

-lunges, push-ups, sit-ups, etc..
-work on your core: a strong core will give you a harder shot
-plyometrics
-work on your stick-handling using these drills: http://www.usahockey.com/Template_Usahockey.aspx?NAV=CO&id=19434
-work on your shot everyday by shooting in your garage (wrist, slap, snap, backhand, etc..)
-run to work on your endurance so you last during the third period
-stretching is also very important! work on your flexability to prevent injury. a good way to do this is always stretch after you workout and 10 minutes every night before you go to bed.

What are some great drills for improving quick feet in hockey over the summer without ice?

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

My loong stride and form are pretty good already. No special equipment. we do have a bowflex though.

Simple agility drills should do the trick.

Ladder drills, line drills, both long and short. Anything where you’re moving your feet really fast. Do lunges, step ups, with any sort of weight you can find. Full Gallons of milk work pretty well.

Oh yeah, don’t forget roller blades.

roller hockey drills?

Friday, March 5th, 2010

what are some good drills i can do at home that will help improve my stick handling skills for roller hockey? i am starting an adult league in a couple of weeks and i want to improve my stick skills from last season.

Im 17 and have been playing roller since I was 6, what i do that helps a lot and has gotten me better is to at home just practice on the garage with a normal puck and your stick and dont look down and just start off slow and do it faster. also at practice skate around the entire rink a few times and stick handle while not looking, its hard at first but it gets easier, also then try this with one hand while not looking this is hard but you get better, also looking down while cutting through center ice will get you dominated just continue to practice while looking up and you will also be able to read the defence better, do this for a while and you will be doing great, also skating fast helps a lot

What are some exercises/drills i can do to improve as a goalie in hockey?

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

i am just starting out and would like some tips. what are the best OFF-ICE exercises/drills/stretches that will help me? also, what muscle groups are most important to work on for goaltending? thanks!

Squats and Lunges are great exercises to build your endurance up for the stance you need to be in all game. Juggling will help with your reflexes and reactions. I’ve always found that pinball helps some, too, with the hand eye coordination. If you can find a reaction ball and grab another person to throw it you’ll be in good shape. I also used to play a lot of catch when I first started playing. I agree with the others, flexibility is key, so look into some yoga or pilates. Your core strength is also important. If you can grab a medicine ball and use it to do sit-ups. Good luck, goaltending is the most fun of any position! p.s. there are a lot of great goalie books out there with workouts. Check out Brian Daccord’s book.
